Tsunami - How can we help?
I know a lot of us are very concerned about the devastating tragedy caused by the Tsunami in South Asia and are wondering what we can to about it.
RELIEF FUND FOR SRI LANKA
Just the other day, we found out that Karla, a neighbor living in the apartment next to Hollywood Church, is from Sri Lanka. Well, her mother is.
Karla was planning a family trip to her mother’s homeland with her brother and sister. It was going to be her brother’s first visit there. Then, the Tsunami happened and the mood of the trip has changed entirely. Any way, they flew out on Jan. 2 to survey what they could do to help the people there. The organization Karla works for called SCOPE (http://www.scopela.org/mission.html), is collecting donations for the relief effort in Sri Lanka, and while Karla is there, she is going to set up a wire transfer system so she can receive the funds. In her last email before she left, she said:
…The organization that I work for (SCOPE/AGENDA) has agreed to collect donations while we are in Sri Lanka. SCOPE will be able to wire money directly, with our help, to Sri Lankan relief groups while we are still in the country and thus avoid the lengthy delays of going through outside NGO's. Please give as much as you can and send it to SCOPE so that it arrives by January 10 at the latest--this way, we will be able to make sure the funds get distributed to the right organization while we are still there. …
Make checks payable to "SCOPE" and send them to:

**write "Sri Lanka Relief" in the memo line so they know to earmark the funds**
If you read this blog in time to send funds by Jan. 10th, I hope you will. Any bit helps, and all donations are tax deductable.
If you didn’t read this in time, here are others ways to donate.

TENRIKYO RELIEF EFFORT
The Tenrikyo International Network for Mutual Help (Japanese webpage http://www.mahoroba.ne.jp/~kaigaibu/T_NET/index.html) has sent 5 million yen to the Red Cross and 1 million yen to the Tenrikyo Indonesia Mission Center as of the end of December 2004. They are still collecting funds and that information is due to come out in the next Tenri Jiho Newspaper, if you read Japanese. I am waiting for an email to let me know how to wire the money to the Network, and I plan to make that information available on this blog as soon as I get it.

The images of the terrible toll the Tsunami has taken shocks us everyday and reminds us how blessed we are. Let us reach out to our brothers and sisters who are trying to recover from this disaster and give generously.
Let our prayers reach them:
